Oh man I thought the first book was a roller coaster ride boy did I have another thing coming!! Hayley took my emotions on a ride of epic proportions. I wasn't sure if I was coming or going with these two and not only with their relationship but with the threat and danger from an unknown or at least unproved source.

Neither of these characters are stellar at relationships but Lucas is in uncharted waters. He never thought he'd find someone to want more with and now that he has he isn't about to let her go or anyone take her from him. Meanwhile, Brooklyn is still trying to get over past hurts, building her trust in him and rolling with all the punches that keep coming her way.

Hayley knocked their conclusion out of the park and I couldn't get enough of it. I didn't want to put it down and had a face full of kindle trying to fight the good fight. This book is hot as hell and will have you on the edge of your seat. I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop either from Lucas screwing up or what next will happen from the outside threat. This book/duet is a winner for sure!!!

“You won’t have your freedom, Fragolina,” he murmurs, his voice rough and hoarse. 

Pressing my lips together, I inhale before I ask, “I won’t?” 

He shakes his head. “You stay here, you whore. That’s the way of the world.”

“Whore?” I whimper. 

His eyes darken, they turn almost black, but I can’t read them. I don’t know what it means, what the look on his face means. He wears a mask, and unreadable mask. 

Clearing his throat, he grunts as he pushes off his desk to standing directly in front of me. He’s so close that I could reach out and touch him, I could feel his hard muscle that I know without a doubt lays beneath his screaming tight shirt. 

“We aren’t much different than from where you came. Except, our whores are here for our members. I’m sure that Jaguar explained this?” he asks. 

I gulp, nodding my head as my eyes slide closed. “He did,” I exhale. 

“Not what you were hoping for?” he asks, arching a brow. 

I shake my head, looking down at my feet, then slowly lifting my gaze back up to his. “I want my freedom,” I say, straightening my spine. 

“Nobody is free, Bellarosa. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be.”

“You’re free,” I state. 

He snorts, looking down to the floor then back up to me. “How old are you, little girl?” 

I bite my bottom lip, not wishing to tell him the truth. He already knows that I’m young. I look young today, too. I didn’t put any makeup on this morning, haven’t worn it in days. I look even younger than nineteen without my makeup mask firmly in place.

“Old enough,” I shrug. 

He shakes his head, not liking that answer at all, I don’t blame him, I wouldn’t like it either. He lifts his hand, but I don’t flinch away like I probably should. The backs of his fingers brush down my cheek, then his hand wraps around the side of my throat. 

“I’m the only one keeping your ass here right now. At a simple command, you’ll be shipped back to Brooklyn to deal with your fate. Maybe you should be a little more fucking agreeable, Fragolina.”

His voice is harsh, hard like steel and I gulp from his warning. He smiles when he feels me swallow. He knows I’m scared, he can see it, somehow, he can see behind my impassive expression.

I turn my head, sniffing my armpit. Fuck. He’s right, I do kind of smell. I count back to my last shower and I cringe. I’m a two-shower-a-day kind of man, but honest to fuck, I think it’s been about four since I had my last one. Every single day has been a blur since I dropped Brooklyn off at her house. 

“She doesn’t want me, and Christ, I don’t know if I really want her,” I sigh. 

Noah stands, leans over, and presses his palms against my desk while he looks down at me. “You do. I know that you do. I know that you did the moment you locked eyes on her sweet ass. I lick my bottom lip, keeping my gaze focused on his. “I’ve never received a penny for my services, Jaguar. If this is some kind of game, you won’t scare me. I won’t be a pawn, not anymore. I want my freedom,” I say, telling him my truth, my secret. 

“None of us is free, babe. You gotta get that shit out of your head, right fuckin’ now. We all owe a debt to someone. Whether it be the man above us, or the Devil. Ain’t none of us without a puppeteer,” Taz mutters. 

I close my eyes for a moment, inhaling a deep breath, thinking about his words. Maybe he’s right. Maybe this dream of being free, maybe it was all for absolutely nothing. Letting out my breath in a heavy exhale, I open my eyes to find the truck stopping in front of a gate.

Mr. Lucas Black himself is leaning against the side of my car, his legs crossed at the ankles, and his eyes very much focused on me. My feet don’t falter because I’m scared, not really, it’s just, I’d almost forgotten just how downright sexy he is. Almost. 

He’s wearing navy blue suit pants that are tailored to his long legs to perfection. His light grey button-up shirt is opened a bit at the collar to show off his upper chest.

His sleeves are rolled up to showcase his forearms—his muscularforearms. So sexy. I’m pretty sure men know exactly what they’re doing when they roll up their sleeves like that. They must know how it affects us women. Judging by the tip of his lips, heknows. 

“How may I help you this evening, Mr. Black?” I ask, clearing my throat as I take a few steps closer toward him. 

I have to look up into his eyes, even though I’m in high heels and he’s leaning against my car with his head tipped down. He’s tall, I estimate his height to be around six-foot-three inches. A mouthwatering six-foot-three inches at that. He’s long and tall, lean and if I touched his abs, I think they’d be sculpted with ridged muscle.

He smirks. I assume it to be his signature expression, as it comes very easily to him. “Your car is a piece of shit, Brooklyn,” he murmurs. 

My body jerks slightly, and I narrow my eyes at him, glaring up into his green gaze. “You’re such a dick,” I announce. My eyes widen in surprise, shocked that I’ve actually said those words aloud. 

His shoulders shake with a quiet laugh as he smiles broadly. “Yeah, beautiful, I know,” he admits.

“Why are you here? And why do you keep giving me flowers?” I ask, placing my hands on my hips. 

His brows rise and he shakes his head once. “I haven’t sent you any flowers, not since the ones you promptly shipped right back to my ass, kitten,” he murmurs. 

My eyebrows pull together, remembering the bouquet wrapped in plastic on my front porch. Even at the time, I thought it didn’t seem to be his style, but hell, what do I know?  

He pushes off of my car while I’m thinking, and then I’m suddenly wrapped in his arms—his strong, spicy, masculine scent surrounding me. One of his hands wraps around my waist while the other rests at the side of my neck. He’s so close, so fucking close, that it wouldn’t take very much effort to kiss him—not much at all.

His hard body presses against mine, it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I like it a little too much, too much to ignore or pretend that I don’t. 

I’m in so much trouble.
